Zoom, the video conferencing giant, is doubling down on its artificial intelligence (AI) investments with the introduction of a generative AI digital assistant called the "AI Companion." This new feature, available at no extra cost to paid Zoom users, aims to enhance productivity, streamline collaboration, and provide an enriched meeting experience.

Zoom's foray into AI began with the launch of generative AI features like Team Chat Compose and Meeting Summary earlier this year. The introduction of the AI Companion marks a significant step forward in Zoom's commitment to harnessing AI's full potential to create a seamless and productive virtual meeting environment.

The AI Companion will roll out to users with paid accounts this fall, reaffirming Zoom's vision of fostering limitless human connections on a single platform. Smita Hashim, Chief Product Officer at Zoom, stated, "We are transcending the hype in generative AI by delivering tangible products and disrupting the industry's pricing model, making it easy for businesses and individuals to leverage generative AI's full benefits in our day-to-day work."

Here's how the Zoom AI Companion is set to transform virtual meetings and collaboration:

👉Enhanced Meeting Highlights: Zoom Meetings users can take advantage of highlights and smart chapters, as well as review summaries, to catch up quickly on missed meetings. This feature empowers users to extract valuable insights and key takeaways effortlessly.

👉Interactive AI Q&A: During a meeting, hosts can enable the AI Companion, allowing attendees to submit questions through the AI Companion side panel. The AI Companion provides AI-generated answers in real-time, ensuring that participants have access to the information they need during the discussion.

👉Automated Meeting Summaries: After a meeting concludes, hosts can receive an automated meeting summary. This summary can be conveniently shared with attendees and individuals who couldn't attend the meeting, ensuring that everyone stays informed and engaged.

👉Effortless Message Drafting: The Zoom AI Companion assists users in drafting messages by considering the context of the chat thread. This feature significantly reduces the time spent composing replies, enabling faster and more efficient communication.

Zoom has also outlined its plans for future enhancements to the AI Companion, aiming to provide even more value to users:

👉Auto-Complete Chat Sentences: By early 2024, users can expect the ability to auto-complete chat sentences, streamlining chat interactions and making communication more efficient.

👉Meeting Scheduling from Chat: Zoom plans to enable users to schedule meetings directly from a chat, enhancing the integration of chat and scheduling capabilities.

👉Zoom Notes Integration: Users will be able to add meeting summaries to Zoom Notes, further enhancing collaboration and information sharing.

👉SMS Thread Summaries: Zoom Phone users can look forward to SMS thread and call summaries, making it easier to manage conversations across various channels.

Zoom's venture into generative AI is not without its considerations for user privacy. The company faced scrutiny in August over changes to its privacy and AI policies. In response, Zoom clarified that it "will not use audio, video, or chat Customer Content to train our artificial intelligence models without your consent." Zoom is committed to safeguarding user privacy and ensuring that customer content is not used to train AI models, emphasizing its dedication to protecting user data.
