According to Hindu mythology, the Pandavas from the Hindu epic Mahabharata are also connected with the history of the temple. After the Great Kuruk War, the Pandavas sought forgiveness from Lord Shiva for the sins committed during the war. However, Shiva did not want to meet them and escaped their pursuit by assuming the form of a bull.

The Pandavas finally caught up with him in today's Kedarnath, where the temple now stands. Lord Shiva sank into the ground leaving behind only his hump. This hump is worshiped as an idol in the temple, while other parts of Lord Shiva's body are worshiped at four other places, forming the Panch Kedar.
