The famous Somnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and It is said to be one of the twelve jyotirlingas which are considered the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva. Located near Veraval in (Prabhas Kshetra) Kathiawad district of Gujarat. The history of the temple dates back more than a thousand years, making it one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in India. It is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus and is the first among the twelve jyotirlinga Shiva shrines.

Somnath Temple is located at a distance of 411 km from the heart of Ahmedabad city. There are flights that connect Ahmedabad airport with Diu airport which is 85 km from the temple. There are many trains like Superfast express and Mail Express between Somnath railway station and Ahmedabad railway station. The fastest route by road is via NH27 and NH47. It takes around 7 hours to travel between Ahmedabad and Somnath Temple by road.

Who built Somnath temple & History:

The original temple is believed to have been built by the Moon God with gold in the Satya Yuga; by Ravana in Treta Yuga in silver; and from Lord Krishna in Dwapara Yuga in Sandalwood.

Chandra, the moon god, is believed to have been married to 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati. However, he preferred Rohini over all others. This angered Prajapati, who insisted on being impartial in his feelings. When Chandra ignored his warning, Prajapati cursed him, causing him to lose his luster.

Without moonlight the world became dark; so all the gods requested Prajapati to withdraw his curse. Daksha suggested that Chandra pray to Lord Shiva and hence the Lord is referred to as Somnath or Someshwar, Lord of the Moon. It is said that Chandra also bathed in the river Saraswati to regain his luster, which accounts for the waxing and waning of the Moon and the tides at this spot on the coast.

Somnath temple timings:

The temple opens at 6:00 AM and closes at 10:00 PM. The temple also performs various rituals during this time. Devotees can be a part of these rituals like morning, afternoon and evening aarti.

Amazing Facts of Somnath Temple:

🚩Somnath temple follows the tradition of 'Pran-Pratishtha' where the idol of Lord Shiva is sacredly consecrated and brought to life with holy mantras and rituals.

🚩Somnath Temple is the first Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas in Indian mythology. Shiva appears as a pillar of fire from this Linga performing Swayambhu.

🚩The Syamantak Mani (Philosopher's Stone) associated with Lord Krishna is said to be hidden inside the Shiva Linga in the temple. According to belief, this magical stone has the ability to produce gold. It is also responsible for creating the magnetic field around the Linga which keeps it floating on the surface of the earth.

🚩The linga is made of iron and the roof of the sanctuary is made of large stones. The temple architects ensured that the magnetic force emanating from the stone would float the Linga in the air.
