Google Expands AI-Powered Search To India And Japan Despite Growing Concerns About AI Misuse
Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE) project, designed to provide curated answers instead of web links, is expanding to India and Japan. Available in English, Hindi, and Japanese, SGE introduces voice input and maintains dedicated ad slots. Google aims to revolutionize search in these key markets despite growing concerns about AI misuse.
Google is taking its groundbreaking AI-powered search to new horizons as it continues to merge generative AI capabilities with its search expertise. The Search Lab's Google Search Generative Experience (SGE) project, initiated in mid-May, is now venturing beyond American borders and making its way into the vibrant markets of India and Japan.SGE represents Google's response to Microsoft's Bing AI and is engineered to offer concise and curated responses to user queries, moving away from traditional lists of webpages. Google's approach distinguishes itself by integrating AI directly into the existing search bar, avoiding the need for a separate chatbot assistant. After launching SGE for US users in late May, Google has now extended access to Search Labs for users in India and Japan.

This AI-powered search feature will be available in Japanese for users in Japan and in both English and Hindi for Indian users, as announced in a recent Google Search blog post. The blog also reveals that users will have the convenience of voice input, allowing them to speak their queries and listen to the responses. Moreover, Search ads will continue to appear in dedicated ad slots on the page, ensuring a seamless experience for users.
Google proudly states that users are already enjoying a positive experience with SGE, particularly when seeking assistance with complex queries and novel types of questions. While the company notes that the highest satisfaction scores come from users aged 18-24, it has yet to provide data to substantiate these claims.
The ascent of generative AI systems, notably with the release of ChatGPT last November, has captured widespread attention. However, as the technology gains popularity, concerns about its potential misuse have arisen, with instances of online scams and fraudulent activities coming to light. Regulatory bodies and lawmakers have taken notice, initiating efforts to address and regulate these issues.
